It
is essentially a meditation exercise. Also
called "Via Dolorosa" or "Via Crucis" These name
dates from the sixteenth century, although the
custom of retracing Jesus' steps to Golgotha
began in the early centuries of Christianity .
The Good
Friday’s procession
is divided into 15 sections each marked by its
own banner.
Roman Soldiers on
Horses open the procession. This takes us back
to a particular historical era of World History,
2000 years ago and inserts the event of the
Passion death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
in a particular moment and place.

The passion, the
Love, that drove Jesus towards His sacrifice of
His own life is symbolically celebrated by Jesus
Himself in the last supper.
4th
Banner: Judas , you betray Me with a kiss?
Judas betrays Jesus with a Kiss. A crowd sent by
the chief priests, Annas and Caiaphas, the
scribes, and the elders, arrest Jesus. Matthew

After supper Jesus
went to the Garden of Gethsemane where He prayed
.It is here that Judas went over to Him.
5th
Banner: The Trial of Jesus.
The
Trial of Jesus. They bound him and took Jesus to
Pilate, the Roman Governor and to King Herod to
be questioned. Luke 23
Characters : Jesus

The Roman Governor Pilate and his wife , Servant
boy. Herod King of Galilee and Salome’ and
servant children..
After being
questioned by the Temple Authorities Jesus was
taken to Pilate. Pilate wanted to avoid getting
involved in this matter and trial, especially
after his wife’s dream about Jesus .Pilate sent
Jesus to Herod King of Galilee, who at the
request of Salome` had cut off the head of John
the Baptist. Herod sends him back to Pilate.

6th
Banner: This is the Man!
The
soldiers stripped Jesus and dressed Him in a
scarlet robe, made a crown of thorns for His
head, put a stick in His hand as a scepter and
mocked Him. Matthew 27:27c

Pilate tried to
convince them that a scourging will suffice for
the accusations that were being made. He orders
the soldiers to scourge Jesus. He presents Jesus
to them with the words: ECCE HOMO-This is the
Man!

7th
Banner: Jesus Condemned
Jesus is Condemned to Death Pilate yields to the
demands of the leaders to release Barabbas and
to crucify Jesus. Luke 23:24c

During Easter the
Governor would release a prisoner. Pilate asked
the crowd to choose They chose Barabbas. Pilate
condemned Jesus to crucifixion. With Jesus two
men were put to the cross, they were thieves.
8th
Banner: Jesus on His way to Calvary
They
led Jesus out to be crucified .Simon of Cyrene
forced to carry the cross. Crowds, including
women, followed Him. Luke 23:26c

Through mysticism and meditation arose the
events of Jesus falling in the street under the
cross 3 times, Jesus meeting his mother, the
woman who wiped Jesus face and his imprint that
remained on the cloth.

9th
Banner: Jesus meets His mother Mary
Your
son will be rejected by many , and it will be
their undoing. But He will be the greatest joy
to those who follow Him. Luke 2:34c

Simon the prophet and
Anna the prophetess said these words to Mary and
Joseph, when they took baby Jesus to be
presented in the temple as the first born Jesus
was to become a sign of contradiction: some will
understand his mission and his identity some
will not.

Banner: Jesus dies on the Cross
Jesus cried out with a loud voice: My God, My
God, why have you forsaken Me? and bowing His
head, He handed over his spirit. Matthew 27:45c

Banner: Mary Magdalen prepares the body of Jesus
for burial
Why
are you upsetting this woman? She poured this
ointment on My body, to prepare Me for burial.
You have the poor always with you, and you can
show kindness to them whenever you wish John

Jesus said these
words, a week before his death, to Judas
Iscariot who was protesting that the expensive
ointments that Mary Magdalene was using over
Jesus were a waste., and that they should be
directed to help the poor. Mary Magdalene was
present at His Crucifixion and Burial, was the
first to see the Risen Lord . Martha, is the one
that welcomed Christ when her brother Lazarus
died and Jesus raised him up from the dead.

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus took Jesus`
body down from the cross rapped it in the linen
cloth with spices, and laid it in a tomb. John
20:38

These are the two men
who took charge to bury Jesus. They completed
their burial according to Jewish customs.

15th
Banner: The Sorrowful Mother
A
sword will pierce your very soul! Luke 2:34c: be
strong, and let your heart take courage, all you
who wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14
Characters : The
sorrowful Mother and Catechism class children
The banner takes us
again to the moment of the presentation of the
Child Jesus in the temple. Imon the prophet
uttered these words to Mary. The words become
words of comfort from the psalms that Mary
prayed too.
